Greetings, I hope everyone has had an incredible week! This week, we continued to build a supportive classroom community. Our focus was a bit more on academic topics such story elements and bundling ones, tens, and hundreds, while also reinforcing the elements that make our classroom a safe space for everyone. Next Tuesday is Curriculum Night and I look forward to seeing you all there. This will be the perfect opportunity for you to learn about what your child will be learning about this year. We will also begin official homework next week and I will review these components during Curriculum Night. I ask for your support in working with your child to complete their assignments with high quality in mind. My goal for homework is to provide each child the opportunity to practice what we are learning in fun yet efficient ways. Next week, we will begin to also focus on the growth mindset. Here is a great video about the growth mindset. Let’s work together to help each child develop this mindset over one that is fixed. Thanks and let’s continue to move forward! -Mr. Cordy
We had a fantastic first week of school. The children and I learned a lot about each other and are forming a unique and caring classroom community. I want each child to feel ownership and pride in being a member of our class. I am so happy that I have been given a chance to work with your child. I also want to thank all the parents who have sent in lovely notes, bought items from our wish list, and have offered kinds words. I truly feel welcomed! You all are amazing, and I hope to continue this positive energy. Again, I am all about communication, and if there is anything you need to discuss, I am an email, Class Dojo message, or text away. I look forward to partnering with you each of you! -Mr. Cordy PS: Please read this post completely. Other posts will be much briefer, I promise!
Greetings, I hope everyone is having a great week thus far. We have a lot of exciting things happening in our class. Please read below to see what's happening in our classroom this week. This week, our crew is focusing on:
On Monday, a geometry photo project was sent home. This project will help our mathematicians see how geometry is all around them while assisting them with reviewing important geometric concepts. The students may use Google Slides to create this project, or they may create a paper book. Please encourage your child to use craftsmanship to create their project. I look forward to seeing the final products! Click here for project directions. This project is due May 4, 2018. Message from Coach Henry about Field Day It's that time of the year....the "Super Bowl" of all school days (according to PE teachers everywhere, granted I was the only one surveyed but who cares)... yes, you are right, FIELD DAY! In the past few years, my goal has been to make this the most enjoyable event for all that partake. Students will participate in 18-21 stations lasting 5-6 mins each. To make this a memorable event, I need amazing volunteers to help things run smoothly...and yes the more the merrier (meaning, aunts, uncles, grandparents are invited to help). If you are interested in volunteering, please email me your availability for that day. Thanks in advance, Coach Henry [email protected] What: Westchester Field Day 2018 When: Friday, May 18th Time: 9:00-11:00 (All K-1 classes) 12:05-2:00 (All-2-3 classes) Upcoming Dates April 20-25 Book Fair May 7 The Week of MAP Testing May 18 Field Day Greetings everyone, I hope that you are all having a great week thus far. This week, we begin a new focus in reading. We are reading fables and then practicing retelling key details from the fable. Along with this, we are focusing on determining the moral of the fable along with our retell. So far, so good. I encourage each family to read aloud different fables at home and hold discussions about what the story is attempting to teach. Click here for a free resource. We are also transitioning from addition to subtraction with numbers with differences to and above 1,000. It is important for each student to find the strategy that works best for them. I encourage each family to work with their child to practice their chosen strategy. This includes articulating their steps. Also, if you have done so, please click this link to sign up for your child's student led conferences. This week, our crew will focus on the follow: -reading fables -retelling key details including the moral of a fable -editing and revising their opinion paragraphs -solve subtraction problems using a place value strategy of choice. The strategies we are focuses on are place value drawing, tops and bottoms/algorithm, expanded form, and subtracting in chunks with/without a number line. Below are helpful videos of the strategies to assist with at home practice and to support your understanding of the strategy.
Have a great week! Greetings families, I hope everyone enjoyed this beautiful weekend and are ready to tackle another week. This month, the students will host their student led conference. This is their opportunity to share where they are as learners and how they got there. It's an exciting time for you to listen and watch your child share their progress through their own words. Please see my email about signing up for Student Led Conferences (SLC). I'm excited about this valuable opportunity and I just know that our little scholars are going to rock it out. Please read below to see what we are focusing on in class. Have a great week! This week, the students will focus on...
March 8 Report Cards will be sent home. March 28 Student Led Conferences (Afternoon) Welcome back! I hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable break. I am energized about these upcoming weeks as we have some important learning opportunities and events happening. This week, we will transition back into our routine by sharing what we did over break and reviewing key concepts focused upon before the break. During this part of the year, we will focus on helping the students expand their comprehension skills in reading by looking more in-depth at details presented by comparing and contrasting different stories. Also, we will focus on strategies that help readers to think more critically about the text they are reading. In math, we will focus on different addition and subtraction strategies with three or more digit numbers. We will then transition to applying these strategies to word problems while thinking critically about the word problems. During our focus in Social Studies, we are focusing on the lives of three incredible Americans and Georgians who made or continue to make lasting contributions to our country and even the world. Our historical figures of focus are Martin Luther King, Jr., Jimmy Carter, and Juliette Gordon Low. Each of these figures provide excellent examples of leadership, service, and philanthropy. It is my goal that the students walk away with an understanding of their contributions and seeing how they can become examples of these traits as well. In class this week, we will focus on...
Per the Nurse, please send in a change in clothes to be stored in their locker in the case of an accident. Upcoming Dates March 8 Report Cards will be sent home. March 28 Student Led Conferences (Afternoon) Greetings families, I hope everyone is having a great week thus far. This week seems to be zipping by, but we are steadily continuing to make progress. As you may have heard, I fractured a bone in my leg. This has thrown me for quite a loop. On a brighter note, I want to say how great it makes me feel to come to a classroom full of caring and empathetic students who have helped me out tremendously by being patient, kind, and eager to lend a helping hand. It truly warms my heart to be a leader of this crew. This week, we are...
